FROM SINGLE MOTHERHOOD TO THE COURTROOM OF DREAMS

Meet Rajani Ovhal: A single mother’s deep drive to study led her to pursue law. The first girl in her generation to pursue education, Rajani Ovhal’s journey shows how courage and education can rewrite any story. From a childhood in a brick kiln to standing in the courtroom she dreams of, she embodies the saying she lives by: “Where there’s a will, there’s a way.”

At 44 years old, a single mother and one of the earliest beneficiaries of The Emelie Foundation, Rajani is now in her final year of LLB. Her passion for learning has carried her from tough beginnings to a place of confidence and purpose.

Behind all the struggles and courage lies her strongest belief: "I didn’t want to die as an uneducated person."

Rajani received a medal for passing her 10th grade from famous singer Vaishali Samant, accompanied by her mathematics teacher.

IT’S NEVER TOO LATE: RAJANI'S JOURNEY FROM BRICK KILN CHILDHOOD TO LAW BOOKS

Rajani was born into a family where both parents worked at a brick kiln. At the age of four, she lost her father, and her mother raised the children as a single parent. Poverty was a constant challenge, and being a girl meant facing discrimination from the start. Schooling was not considered important, yet Rajani held a quiet dream of education while watching other children go to school.

She began by going to evening tuitions near home, but soon had to take care of her younger brother as her mother worked. Despite these responsibilities, her determination to study never waned. Deep inside, she always held onto the dream that one day she too would study.

Life pushed her into marriage at the age of fourteen. Rajani’s life took a new turn when she became a single mother, raising her son alone. For his education and a better future, she took on multiple jobs: a doorkeeper on a school bus, a Yakult saleswoman, and later, a role at ITC Limited. She balanced all responsibilities at home, always prioritising her son’s education. But her dream of studying never faded.

At the age of 27, filled with both fear and courage, she decided to go to school. With the encouragement of a school principal where she worked, she enrolled in Class 8th at Ramabai College and stepped into a classroom for the first time. Sitting in a classroom filled with students much younger was uncomfortable than her age. She felt every stare, but her desire to study was strong enough to combat these hurdles she faced along the way. She passed with good grades but had to take breaks. At 32, encouraged by a supportive teacher, she resumed her studies, completing her 9th and 10th with distinction. Despite pauses and setbacks, Rajani went on to complete her 10th and 12th grades. Many days involved long travels. Self-doubt often surfaced, making her wonder if it was too late to study. Yet, she kept going.

The challenges along her way were many. There were days she felt hopeless, asking herself why opportunities had come so late, or if she would ever find a stable career. But she reminded herself that this might be her last chance to study, and giving up was not an option. In those moments of doubt, her brother and son stood firmly by her side. Her son supported her academically, helping with difficult words and concepts. Their presence gave her the strength to continue when the path felt too heavy.

Since then, she has never looked back. Her journey continued with a graduation in commerce. While on her journey, she discovered a deep interestin law, and today she proudly stands in her final year of LLB.

WALKING WITH THE EMELIE FOUNDATION

Rajani’s journey with The Emelie Foundation began in 12th grade, when Madhav Ashram, supporting part of her fees for pursuing computer courses, introduced her to the foundation. The Foundation covered the rest of her course fees and has supported her ever since. Since then, Rajani has been growing beautifully and has been an active participant in the Foundation’s activities.

From the day she first came to us, Rajani has grown into a confident woman with her own voice and expression. For us, this is true empowerment and independence. From then on, the Foundation has stood beside her— supporting with financial aid, and most importantly, believing in her potential. She calls this support a turning point in her life, one that allowed her to keep walking her path with dignity and courage.

Rajani shares, “The support from The Emelie Foundation has lightened my financial burden and allowed me to focus fully on my studies. Without them, I don’t think I could have come this far. Their belief in me inspired me to work harder and ,one day, to give back in the same generous way to others.”

LOOKING AHEAD

Today, Rajani dreams of becoming a lawyer and using her law education to help those caught in the system, particularly people jailed for minor offences whose families have no means to navigate the legal process. She wants to be their voice and their support, just as others have been for her.

We are proud and grateful to have walked alongside Rajani on this journey. Her courage and growth remind us that age is never a barrier to learning, rebuilding, or rewriting one’s story.

We extend our deep gratitude to her brother, Mr. Parmeshwar Potdar, whose constant guidance and financial support gave her the courage to continue, and to her son, Mr. Nikhil Ovhal, who has been her steadfast companion in both study and life. Nikhil has also come so far. From ensuring he received a strong education from the very beginning, to seeing him complete his graduation and now prepare for banking exams, Rajani’s dedication has shaped his path as well. To all the teachers, people who pushed Rajani to continue her studies. Together, they all have been her quiet cheerleaders.

Her journey carries a message for every single mother and young woman: it is never too late to take bold steps toward education and independence, especially when supported by a compassionate community.

We celebrate Rajani, honour her resilience, and wish her the very best in all that lies ahead.

The Emelie Foundation stands with Rajani, and with every woman daring to rewrite her story with courage, education, and empowerment.
